Novak Djokovic: Juan Martin del Potro reveals classy message US Open champion sent him

NOVAK DJOKOVIC showed his class with his comments to Juan Martin del Potro after beating him in the US Open final.

Novak Djokovic picked up his third title at Flushing Meadows with a dominant 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory against the Argentinian on Sunday.

Del Potro was visibly upset by the loss, having defied the odds to reach his first final at the US Open in nine years.

The third seed almost quit tennis back in 2015 due to a succession of wrist injuries but couldn’t pull off an unlikely upset against new world No 3 Djokovic.

Del Potro was in tears following the match, with his opponent offering a warm hug and condolences before the presentation ceremony.

And Del Potro has now revealed what Djokovic said to him after the match.

“I was very sad,” Del Potro admitted.

“On court, he approached me, he told me that he understood my (emotions), but that I was a great champion, he was proud with where I was, with what I was achieving and with all the effort that I had made to be there, which would make me happy and calm.”

Djokovic’s victory in New York saw him win his second Grand Slam of the year having previously won at Wimbledon.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal scooped the other two with the Swiss winning the Australian Open and the latter continuing his dominance on clay at the French Open.

Del Potro has only one Grand Slam to his name - his 2009 US Open win over Roger Federer - but insists he is enjoying playing in the same era as the aforementioned trio.

“Of course, is a big challenge to take these kind of tournaments to them,” he said.

“But also I think we are proud to be close to these legends.

“I’ve been during all my career learning with Novak, Roger, Rafa, seeing them winning these events very often.

“It's amazing.

“I don't feel sad that I couldn't win Grand Slams because of them.

“I am just one of the guys that have lucky to be in the same era as them, and it's great.”
