Roger Federer: Benoit Paire wants Rafael Nadal clash after US Open loss

BENOIT PAIRE hopes his performance against Roger Federer gets him a Davis Cup call-up next month - with Rafael Nadal a potential opponent.

Paire surrendered two match points during his clash with Federer at the Halle Open in June but the Swiss star offered him less respite during their US Open meeting yesterday.

Federer romped to a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 victory to book a mouthwatering third-round showdown with Nick Kyrgios.

But Paire is hoping France’s Davis Cup skipper Yannick Noah, who was watching the match, may have a selection dilemma.

Lucas Pouille, Nicolas Mahut, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Adrian Mannarino and Jeremy Chardy were the five players involved in the quarter-final win over Italy.

But Paire is looking to break into the team which takes on Nadal’s Spain on September 14-16.

“I wanted to show many things to many people. I showed not to be far away and that you play about details with Federer,” he said.

“Once again, like at the beginning of the year, I play nice matches against good players, but it doesn't pay off.

“Second round against Federer, five-set second round against (Kei) Nishikori. These are good matches that I would like to play later.

“In the little tournaments, I have to do better than what I did at the beginning of the year.”

After going down in straight-sets to Federer, Paire explained how he was disappointed to not lay one glove on the world No 2.

“It ended in three sets, but I had many chances,” Paire added.

“He was more forward in the score than in Halle, but during the match I was so close.

“I make two, three silly mistakes. I feel that I have the chances to bother him.

“I leave the match with regrets. All what Roger does is very strong, but during the match I could have done much better.

“It's a shame not to have won at least a set or two. Then, congratulations to Federer, I am his No 1 fan and I admire him a lot.”
