US Open: Andy Murray brands Fernando Verdasco 'LIAR' in fresh heat break twist

ANDY MURRAY has hit back at Fernando Verdasco after a four-set loss to the Spaniard in the US Open second round.

Murray was beaten 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-4 in sweltering conditions at Flushing Meadows - a match in which the pair were given a 10-minute heat break.

Murray was seemingly unaware the break had begun after the fourth set, however, saying: “When is the 10 minutes from? Has it already started?"

Verdasco requested the break and was already walking off the court while Murray was still in his chair.

There was controversy, though, as Murray alleged Verdasco of talking to his coaching team during the short lay-off, which is prohibited by the tournament rules.

“When I came out of the shower, his coach and one of the Spanish doubles players were in there chatting to him, and you're not allowed to speak to your coach,” Murray said.

"I'm not blaming Fernando and his team. They certainly weren't trying to break any rules.

"It shouldn't be for the player that's competing against him to have to go to the supervisor."

However, Verdasco denied the claims, saying: “I don't want to say that Andy lied but I didn't talk one word with my coach."

“I was in the ice bath with Marcos Baghdatis and his coach," Verdasco then added.

"I know exactly the rule and I don't want to be the one breaking it."

And now Murray has responded via Instagram, sarcastically mocking the Spaniard in a post.

At the end of a reflective message about the tournament, the former British No 1 wrote: “I’m off to get a health check as apparently I’ve started imagining things. #liarliarpantsonfire

Verdasco has since posted on Instagram, but not retorted to Murray’s jibe.
